A. Jimmie Pigg- Second Annual "Outstanding Teacher" Award
Jimmie Pigg was a teacher, biologist, and creator of the modern OJAS.
He tirelessly involved his students in original scientific research and
many have become science teachers and/or scientists. They attribute their
love of science to the example he set when they were his students. The
Jimmie Pigg Memorial Award for Outstanding Science Teaching at the pre-collegiate
level commemorates the dedication of this extraordinary teacher to scientific
endeavors and student learning.
This award is being given to an Oklahoma science teacher who best exhibits
these same qualities. The winner receives a $1,000 check, an award, and
grateful appreciation for untiring dedication to students.
This year’s recipient has over 50 student who have excelled at OJAS
& OSSEF competitions and won top national and international awards.
Many have continued their success in their scientific endeavors as professional
scientists. This year’s winner has an earned doctorate with over 20 publications,
and is highly regarded by his colleagues and students. One of these students
described him as "...challenging, encouraging, and determined to bring
everyone to a deeper understanding. He earns the respect of his students
by respecting them. He focuses on and brings out the best in all of his
students. He is always open to new ideas and methods, and accepts constructive
criticism with humility. There seems to be no limit to the amount of time
and energy that he will invest in each of his students. I cannot imagine
anyone more deserving of this recognition."
This year’s recipient of Jimmie Pigg Outstanding Teacher of the Year
from McLoud High School, Dr. Bruce Smith.
B. 2001 Intel Science Talent Search-
This national competition is in its 60th year and is America’s
oldest and most prestigious pre-college science competition (used to be
called the Westinghouse). It is considered the Junior Nobel Prize. Seniors
only are eligible and they submit research papers which were judged on
research ability, scientific originality, and creative thinking. Semifinalists
of the 60th Science Talent Search competition were chosen from
among 1600 entrants and represent 166 high schools and 36 states. For 1st
time in 4 years Oklahoma has a National Semifinalist. These students received
$1,000 scholarship & their schools received $1,000 for their science
department. Both of these students have been active in OJAS competitions;
we would now like to recognize them
